Tech Center Presentations Impacted by COVID-19

May 26, 2020

Online presentationCCC Technology Center projects that were slated to participate at upcoming statewide conferences have had their participation significantly scaled back or put on hold due to the transition to virtual venues in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CCC Accessibility Center expects to have a significantly reduced presence at the Online Teaching Conference in June as a result of the event moving online. Meanwhile, CCC Data, which was confirmed to present at the now-postponed RP Conference, is on standby for an updated conference schedule.

Moving the Online Teaching Conference (OTC) to an all-virtual program drastically changed the pre-conference workshops schedule and lineup. Sean Keegan, Director of the Accessibility Center, was scheduled to lead two half-day workshops on June 17, focused on accessibility fundamentals for online courses and online documents. Those presentations are no longer reflected in the OTC Pre-Conference Workshops schedule, which has been reduced to four two-hour workshops.

However, two Accessibility Center sessions are included in the main OTC program posted online. On Thursday, June 18, at 11 a.m., Shawn Jordison will present “Accessibility Evaluation Tools for Canvas Courses.” Jordison, Accessibility Specialist for Alternate Media and Assistive Technology with the Accessibility Center, will explore four automated accessibility checkers, and examine their capabilities and limitations for properly testing elements like color contrast, headings, lists, hyperlinks, alternate text for images, and table headers.

On Friday, June 19, at 11 a.m., Liezl Madrona will present “Steps to Building Effective and Accessible Course Design.” Madrona, an Instructional Designer with the Accessibility Center, will cover the basics to ensure accessibility when developing online courses, and address common questions about aligning course materials to accessibility laws.

Separately, Mark Cohen, CCC Data Product Manager, is awaiting a new schedule for his confirmed session at the RP Conference. The presentation, titled “Introducing the CCC Data Warehouse: Connecting College Researchers to Data,” will discuss the role of the Data Warehouse within the CCC Data program, the data sources that are currently supported, those that will be added, and how colleges can access their data.

Originally scheduled for April 15-17, the RP Conference was postponed due to COVID-19. According to the RP Group, the conference will be held in the coming months in a virtual format, though a new date has yet to be announced.
