Office Hours Provide Accessibility Guidance for CCC Personnel

February 25, 2022

Approximately twice a month from August to April, presentations, demonstrations, and open discussions offer techniques and strategies to ensure electronic information is accessible to people of all backgrounds and abilities. The information is applicable for those who work with students as well as those who produce documents or websites that will be accessed by the public.

Two upcoming Office Hours sessions will have equity as a common thread. On March 3, the topic will be techniques and tools for delivering accessible presentations. But rather than delve into the mechanics of making accessible PowerPoint slides — for which detailed resources can be found on the Accessibility Center website — this hour will center on how to present information in an equitable and inclusive manner.

Led by Dr. Daminna Standfield, an accessibility specialist at the Accessibility Center, the discussion will go over the P's of inclusive presentations:

  • Preparation
  • Presentation space checklist
  • Participation equity in presentation activities
  • Presentation material accessibility guidelines in both the virtual and in-person space

Continuing the equity theme, the March 10 session will focus on accessibility as part of diversity, equity and inclusion. Accessibility is an essential counterpart to these important goals, yet in practice many activities around increasing inclusivity actually unintentionally marginalize or shut out people with disabilities, according to Dawn Okinaka, director of the Accessibility Center.

The CCC Chancellor’s Office recently added accessibility to its DEI statement. The Office Hours session will provide a platform to discuss ways the CCC can truly add accessibility into the fold of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Looking ahead, the Accessibility Center will host two more Office Hours sessions on April 7 and April 14 before closing out the fiscal year with its full-day summer workshop on June 14. Office Hours will resume again at the beginning of the fall term.

All Office Hours sessions start at 1 p.m. and run approximately an hour. A schedule of upcoming sessions can be found on the Accessibility Center event calendar. See the Statewide CCCTC Meetings calendar for Zoom details.
