Gonzales Named Interim CCC Chancellor

August 30, 2022

Dr. Daisy Gonzales, interim chancellor of the California Community CollegesCalifornia Community Colleges Deputy Chancellor Daisy Gonzales has been named to serve as the system’s interim chancellor while the statewide Board of Governors conducts a national search to fill the position on a permanent basis.

Gonzales’ appointment came by unanimous vote of the BOG following the departure of Eloy Oakley on July 31. Her appointment became effective Aug. 1, and is expected to last for up to 12 months.

For a five-month stretch in 2021, Gonzales stood in as acting chancellor while Oakley took a temporary role with the U.S. Department of Education. During that period, she is credited with helping to coordinate state and federal resources for colleges to respond with urgency to rampant wildfires and the ongoing pandemic.

“California’s 116 colleges are the entryway to higher education for the majority of Californians,” Gonzales said. “I am grateful and humbled by the Board of Governors’ support and confidence to continue to serve our students.”

Gonzales said the Chancellor’s Office will continue to focus on the system’s Vision for Success in tandem with advancing the Roadmap for the Future, established as part of the 2022-23 state budget agreement.

Advocate for Diversity, Student Success

Gonzales is the first woman of color to serve as CCC Chancellor, and is lauded for leading systemwide efforts to increase diversity among CCC faculty and improve outcomes for Black and Latinx students.

She has overseen operational and strategic policy planning for the Chancellor’s Office since 2018 and chairs the system’s statewide participatory governance body, Consultation Council. She has been an Aspen Institute presidential fellow, serves on the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges and was recognized as a 2021 woman of the year by the California Legislative Women’s Caucus and Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis.

“With her institutional knowledge of the system’s progress toward the Vision for Success and fiscal and policy expertise, Dr. Gonzales is the perfect person to lead the California Community Colleges during this time,” said Pamela Haynes, president of the CCC Board of Governors. “With her support, the system has achieved all-time highs for completion and transfer outcomes, but there is still much work to be completed. We appreciate Dr. Gonzales’ collaborative and innovative leadership, and her passion to continue to serve our students.”

Meanwhile, the BOG has formed a committee to lead a nationwide search for the next CCC Chancellor. The committee is composed of BOG members Pamela Haynes, president; Amy M. Costa, vice president; Hildegarde B. Aguinaldo; Joshua N. Elizondo; Tom Epstein; Jolena M. Grande; and Bill Rawlings. Additionally, Clemaus Tervalon, president of the Student Senate for the California Community Colleges and Ginni May, president of Academic Senate for California Community College will represent students and faculty, respectively.
