California Community Colleges Online Education InitiativeThe California Community Colleges (CCC) Online Education Initiative (OEI) recently selected Link-Systems International Inc. (LSI) as best suited to provide online tutoring services for the CCC.

Services will be available through an agreement between the Foundation for Califorrnia Community Colleges and LSI. LSI is a 20-year-old company that offers extensive one-on-one, web-based tutoring services to students in all subject areas.

“We are pleased to be working with Link-Systems as a partner that shares our focus on student success, and is willing to develop innovative systems that integrate very well with what we currently do as well as to significantly extend our tutoring possibilities,” said Patricia James, OEI Executive Director.

LSI will work with the OEI’s 24 pilot colleges to provide tutoring for online students in the pilot—set to begin in the spring term—as well as to create a platform for learning centers to connect their local tutors to online students. In addition to providing access to tutors, the LSI/OEI partnership will allow on-campus learning centers throughout the state to assist online students more effectively.

Link-Systems International Inc.It is anticipated that, by fall, colleges outside of the pilot will be able to buy into the LSI tutoring services contract at a reasonable cost.

“The availability of tutoring, both on computers as well as tablets, will reassure students that the resources necessary for success are always at their fingertips,” said Jory Hadsell, OEI Chief Academic Officer. “This partnership allows students to get the learning assistance they need, when it is convenient for them, using their own flavor of technology. We are excited about this new level of support for student learning.”

The proposal and contract negotiation processes for online tutoring services were managed by the Foundation for California Community Colleges. The Foundation secured special pricing for the community colleges and, beginning in Fall 2015, any state agency may utilize a “buy in” option which extends that pricing to them. The Foundation’s CollegeBuys program was leveraged by the OEI to secure the contract with Link-Systems International.
