CCC Online Education InitiativeExecutives past and present of the California Community Colleges (CCC) Online Education Initiative (OEI) shared the program’s goals and hurdles with a receptive audience at the recent Campus Technology Fall Forum.


John Makevich, OEI director of strategic planning and operations, and John Ittelson, professor emeritus at CSU Monterey Bay and former OEI launch team associate executive director, co-presented “The California Online Education Initiative: Opportunities and Challenges” to attendees of the Online Learning and Blended focus sessions of the Fall Forum on Nov. 4 in Chicago.

"It was great to demonstrate not only our plans, but also our accomplishments and successes, to a national audience,” Makevich said. “The session inspired discussions about how initiatives such as the OEI could be implemented in other venues throughout the country and, more importantly, how students will benefit from these efforts."

“Educators around the country are always interested in what California is doing,” added Ittelson. “They look at our state as a trendsetter.”

The two-day Campus Technology Fall Forum was titled “Exploring Educational Innovation & Technology,” and was keynoted by Sally Johnstone, vice president of academic advancement for Western Governors University, and Mohammand H. Qayoumi, president of San Jose State University.

Presentation Covered Wide Scope

The OEI presentation covered a wide scope of what the initiative is all about, and how 112 colleges are in the relatively early process of moving toward providing online courses to community college students throughout the state. These courses have two very important features: First, they will be designed, presented and taught based on a thorough Course Design Rubric that has become the standard for the development of exceptional online courses.

Second, they are high-demand courses that are part of associate degree for transfer programs. Giving students easy access to these kinds of online courses will enable them to stay on task for associate degree completion and transfer to four-year institutions. The benefit for students is exceptional—they will be getting top-notch, well-developed courses in a timely fashion through an easy-to-access OEI Exchange system.

Spring Pilot & CCMS RFP

In the meantime, two important parts of the OEI are moving forward, among many others: the Spring pilot of the tutoring and readiness solutions and the current RFP process for a Common Course Management System (CCMS).

The Spring Pilot is being driven by the eight Online Readiness Pilot Colleges. This group is working on the production of online course modules that will support students as they are enrolled in OEI courses. Details about The RFP for a CCMS are published at
