CENIC Annual Conference Program Announced

CENIC 2018 The Right Connection, March 5-7, 2018, Monterey, CACENIC, the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California, will hold its 21st annual conference, The Right Connection, March 5-7, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey, Calif. The CENIC annual conference brings together participants from public and private research universities, public libraries, science and performing arts centers, private sector technology businesses, and city, county, and state government sectors.

Keynotes & Program Highlights

Keynote speakers at the 2018 conference include Vint Cerf, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist, Google; Ilkay Altintas, Chief Data Science Officer and Director, San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego; and Kireeti Kompella, Senior Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, Juniper Networks. The conference program also includes a remarkable lineup of speakers and panels for each of CENIC’s communities.

Some program highlights include:

  • A Pacific and National Research Platform track including Reports from the Pacific Research Platform and Towards a National Research Platform, both intended to assist various regional Research Platform efforts in information-sharing and, ultimately, convergence on a national plan

  • A panel on the physical and health impacts of climate change for the Pacific, led by Jerry Meehl (Senior Scientist, NCAR) and Kristie L. Ebi (Director, Center for Health and the Global Environment, University of Washington)

  • Scientific and Cultural Institutions on Regional, National, and International R&E Networks

  • Wireless Extensions of R&E Networks, which provides examples of how large-scale wireless high-performance data networks are used for interdisciplinary research and education applications such as earthquake detection and fire monitoring

  • Mastering Data Management examples from the California Community Colleges

  • Opportunities for K-12 collaboration with museums, public libraries, and universities in sessions such as Visualizing Cultural Heritage; Riding the WAVE: Student-led Docent Program for UC Merced; and More than Internet Access, which demonstrates how libraries across the state are using high-speed broadband to expand programs and services
