OTC 2010 Conference Highlights

The Online Teaching Conference 2010 (OTC) will highlight new educational technology and focus on green and sustainable learning.  The OTC 2010 will be held June 16, 17, 18 at San Diego City College in San Diego, CA.

Upcoming dates to be aware of if planning on attending the conference are:

There will be a multitude of sessions for both in-person attendees and for those attending online.Some of the sessions that will be featured for online attendees will include:

  • Lecture Capture (using Panopto) Leads to Student Success presented by A. Andaz Ahmad will demonstrate how lectures can be captured within 15 minutes. Instructors can use lecture capture to save time and money, improve retention, become more tech savvy and increase student success. Benefits of lecture capture for students including the opportunity to review difficult lectures, make-up classes missed due to the college holiday schedule or emergencies, and helping prepare for exams. Students can take notes digitally within recorded lectures, download lecture notes and upload lectures onto their iPods for added convenience. The implementation of this project at Ivy Tech Northeast under Andaz Ahmad’s leadership has been selected as a finalist in the IMS Global Learning Consortium.
     
  • Curriculum Development for Online Career and Technical Education by Bob Hiles will review what was learned in developing a fully online CTE course. The Orange County Department of Education received an SB70 grant to develop an online Production & Design course. Discussions will include incorporating synchronous and asynchronous elements such as Elluminate and Google Docs, local and cloud-based curriculum development software like SoftChalk, UDUTU, as well as student-centered constructivist tools such as interactive, Web-based activities and tactile manipulatives.
     
  • Seeing Online Instructor Evaluation through Various Institutional Roles and Lenses by Heather Zeng, Ph.D., Cathy Taylor, J.D., Mike Eskey, Ph.D will look at online instructor evaluation from a variety of perspectives: the administrator, the instructor, the faculty member and the student. The presenters, who are faculty members and online evaluators, will deconstruct each of the roles. Preliminary research and the value that consistent and reliable online evaluations can provide will be discussed.

    Blaine Morrow will conduct sessions on the effective use of CCC Confer at the OTC 2010.

    Second Language Learning: Creating Meaningful Online Experiences for Learners by Chantal Ounsworth will showcase a variety of ways to make second-language learning applicable and meaningful for learners in an online course.
     
  • Visual Organizers to Enhance Online Learning by January Colacurcio and Deidre Pleasant will explore how visual organizers, such as Webs, charts and diagrams can be adapted for use in the virtual school environment. This session will offer some practical uses for visual organizers in the synchronous and asynchronous online classrooms.
     
  • Low Tech Faculty Survival Guide by Fan-Yu Lin and Ying-Hsiu Liu provides a quick start for faculty with limited online teaching experiences. Key principles and best practices will be presented to provide guidelines for effective online instruction.
     
  • Textbook Deathwatch: The Digital Textbook Revolution by Brian Bridges will help instructors learn how to take advantage of free, high quality, Open Source textbooks as part of the Digital Textbook Initiative.
     
  • Beyond the Online Classroom: Integrating Social Networking to Foster an Engaged Community of Distance Students by Dr. Jean Mandernach, Dr. Heather Zeng, and Dr. Teresa Mason will demonstrate strategies to engage distance students in a closer affiliation with the department, university and discipline, including development of an online student organization, use of social networking sites, development of an email newsletter to explore issues and share department updates and promotion of academic competitions.
     
  • Leading as a service: Organizing to Support and Develop Faculty by Henrietta Siemens will explore how developing and communicating a flexible faculty support plan can help set priorities for department, staff and budget. This session will focus on resources and integrating ‘best practices’ for organizing faculty support services on your campus.
     
  • You Too Can Be a TV Star by Dave Giberson, Hank Beaver, and Katie Palacios will demonstrate how to use a desktop Personal Video Studio for faculty to produce sophisticated, accessible instructional video from a variety of inputs including cameras, computers (screencasting), document cameras and other video sources. Production is live-to-tape with no editing needed. The system includes the software and hardware necessary to make the video accessible via captioning.
     
  • Hear it Here! Audio on the cheap by Timothy Wahl aims to help instructors incorporate audio cheaply and easily in course platforms using SONY Sound Forge 8.0. The session will walk instructors through recording, editing, saving and uploading audio to a content management system. Participants also get the lowdown on free online storage for their recordings for later deployment.

cuelogo.jpgMany more offerings will be available to in person attendees, including sessions on using Dragon Naturally Speaking, integrating Twitter and Facebook into online courses, exploring new Web 2.0 tools, using CCC Confer and communicating with new tools.

For the first time, the OTC is a collaboration with the Computer Using Educators, Inc (CUE). CUE provides leadership and support to advance student achievement in the educational technology community. CUE has been instrumental in providing support to annual conferences in California during this year’s budget cutbacks by collaborating efforts. <>
