Single Sign-On Tech Free To Community Colleges

InCommon Single Sign-On TechnologyCalifornia’s community colleges can get free membership to the InCommon Federation, a program that allows users to access on-campus, off-campus and cloud resources with the convenience of a secure, single sign-on.

Membership fees are being paid for by the California Community Colleges (CCC) Chancellor’s Office, through an agreement with Internet2, which operates InCommon. Colleges that are already InCommon members can get their fees reimbursed.

Easier Access To Online Services

Participation in the InCommon program will enable the colleges to securely manage access to online resources locally, throughout the CCC and over the Internet, according to Internet2.

Sign up today for free membership in InCommon Federation.

For example, students and faculty affiliated with more than one community college will be able to have one online identity to access online services, no matter which of the 112 campuses they are visiting. Significant services developed and hosted by one CCC campus can now be made available to any of the other colleges without the need to issue new IDs to existing faculty, staff or students.

“InCommon will help provide millions of California community colleges students convenient and secure access to our statewide technology initiatives in Online Education, Common Assessment and Education Planning,” said Tim Calhoon, executive director of the CCC Technology Center. “We are pleased to have Internet2 as a partner in this transformative effort across our system.”

In addition to convenient access to the tools and technology services being developed under the three statewide initiatives, InCommon membership will enable single sign-on to applications provided through CCC vendors such as Blackboard, Canvas, Dropbox, Microsoft and rSmart. Moreover, members will pay a lower, fixed annual fee for security certificates for all domains owned by the college.

In a recent interview with Campus Technology, Calhoon discussed how InCommon Federation will benefit colleges and students. Read the interview here.
