ePortfolio California Building Community
Last Updated on Friday, 13 August 2010 Written by Sandoval Chagoya Friday, 13 August 2010
More than 30 state, national, and international educators convened digitally on Wednesday afternoon to discuss building an effective community of practice around ePortfolios.
The discussion was hosted by the ePortfolio California project team and delivered via a CCC Confer webinar. The webinar format allowed the group to collaborate through their computers and phones despite the fact that some were attending from the other side of the globe.
"We were delighted to host an energetic group," said Patty Donohue, ePortfolio California program manager. "Our guests were obviously enthusiastic about using ePortfolios to serve students, and we were pleased to see so much interaction."
Attendees used chat messaging to exchange contact information and ideas about how to foster an effective community of practice.
ePortfolio California recently announced its intent to design and develop a community of practice to support collaboration, communication and other community-building efforts for those involved or interested in exploring ePortfolios for education. The ePortfolio California community of practice will collaborate with other national and international ePortfolio organizations and communities of practice to promote best practices in using ePortfolios for teaching and learning .
"Our goal for the webinar was to allow potential members an opportunity to let us know what they wanted from a community of practice," Donohue said. "There were many common threads of interest among attendees, and those areas of interest will help to form the immediate focus for our community building effort."
Donohue invites anyone interested in participating in the design and development of the ePortfolio California community of practice to contact her at pdonohue@cvc.edu.
An archived transcript of the webinar is available below. Please note that the first few minutes of the meeting were not captured by the archive.
