Vulnerability Assessment & Management Services

Vulnerability Assessment & Management Services Through CCC Information Security CenterInformation security attacks are a real threat, with more network breaches occurring every year — and colleges are frequent targets. A single breach can expose the personal information of thousands of people, and could leave the college district liable.

It’s important for IT teams to understand where security vulnerabilities exist in the networks they manage. Vulnerability assessment scanning is the first step. It involves an extensive process to find and rank weaknesses or holes in your network’s security defenses before they can be exploited by criminals.

A continuous process of frequent vulnerability scanning is the best course of action, so that new security threats can be promptly tracked, analyzed and remediated.

Free Service For Colleges

It’s a time-consuming process that many college IT departments may not have the resources to accommodate. Here’s where the California Community Colleges (CCC) Information Security Center can help.

The CCC Information Security Center provides free vulnerability assessment scans and vulnerability management services for all of California’s community colleges. All you have to do is sign up.

What’s Provided

The Information Security Center will work with colleges to scan internet-facing servers in order to discover vulnerabilities before criminals do. Vulnerability scans can help discover:

  • Vulnerabilities that allow a remote attacker to control or access sensitive data on a system
  • Misconfiguration (e.g., open mail relay, missing patches, etc.)
  • Default passwords, a few common passwords, and blank/absent passwords on some system accounts
  • Denials of service against the TCP/IP stack by using mangled packets

Additionally, vulnerability management through Tenable Security Center will allow colleges to gain actionable insight into security risks through a cloud-based vulnerability management platform. The process uses a Nessus scanner installed on your network to find all the vulnerabilities on your network and report them back to Security Center. Security Center will help you prioritize the systems that need to be addressed by showing you the criticality of the vulnerabilities and which ones have exploits already available.
